Patent System & Process
Patent System in Ireland
Irish patents are administered by the Intellectual Property Office of Ireland (IPOI). As an English-speaking EU member state and home to many leading pharmaceutical, biotech, and high-tech multinationals' European headquarters, Ireland sees significant IP filing and accumulation activity. Ireland's patent system offers two types of protection: a Full Term Patent (20 years) and a Short Term Patent (10 years, lower examination threshold). Ireland is a PCT member state, an EPC contracting state (European patents can be validated), and participates in the European Unitary Patent system.

Trademark System & Process
Trademark System in Ireland
Irish trademarks are administered by IPOI, with protection available via IPOI direct national application (Ireland only) or EUIPO EU trademark (EUTM, covering all 27 EU member states). Ireland joined the Madrid Protocol in 2001. Since both Irish and English are official languages, trademark applications are typically filed in English.
